Behavioural ecology (BIOL2213)

The central theme of the course is the functional explanation of how animals respond to a variety of environmental situations. The course explains how behavioural patterns contribute to the survival and reproductive success of individuals and how the various tactics and strategies observed may have been selected. Notions of optimality are central to the lectures.

The course presents concepts and examples related to the exploitation of spatial and trophic resources, reproductive systems (sexual selection, mating systems, alternative reproductive behaviors), social interactions, personality traits, and dispersal ecology). Examples rooted in conservation ecology are presented in the various chapters of the course.

The lectures are given in the autumn and is part of the cursus of the students of the Master in Biology of Organisms and Ecology (BOE) and the Master in Psychological Sciences.

Ecology, Ethology and conservation of amphibians

The course consists of an introduction to the diversity, eco-ethology and conservation of amphibians. It is at the interface between fundamental and applied sciences: from knowledge to species protection. The course is divided between (1) a presentation of the diversity of amphibian species, mainly from temperate regions; (2) an analysis of their status and decline according to risk factors (habitat modification, pollutants, invasive species, emerging diseases, road traffic) and associated management measures.
